Canadian finds hidden camera in Airbnb bathroom: “Embarrassed”

Kennedy Coolwell, a Canadian, used her TiktTok account to share the terrifying experience she lived with 14 friends.

When renting a house from Airbnb to celebrate a birthday, on the second day of accommodation one of the women felt that she was being watched and decided to look at all the rooms in the place with a flashlight.

“She searched every shower, every picture frame, doorknob, everywhere in the house for a camera and found one in the bathroom,” Kennedy explained in the video, which now has over five million views.

“The outlet didn’t work, you couldn’t plug anything into it […] One of the exits was facing directly to the shower”.

Showing the photo of the plug in the bathroom, the young woman explains: “You can see it up here, there is nothing, it looks totally normal. And then the bottom one, look at that camera. We freaked out and called the police.”

“I was personally embarrassed by the things I was doing in that bathroom the night before,” Coolwell commented.

After calling the police and the officers searching the place, Kennedy shows the conversation with the police, where they inform that the images would be sent for analysis.

As a “moral of the story”, the young woman says that it is better to “always check for Airbnb cameras and listen to super paranoid friends”.

Asked about the property in the comments of the video, the Canadian said that Airbnb suspended the host’s announcement and also shared that it is already “talking to the lawyers this week”.

So far, Airbnb has not commented on what happened. However, its official policy states that hosts are allowed to use cameras that are “clearly disclosed” and “do not infringe on other people’s privacy”. The ban, however, is for “hidden cameras” and filming equipment in any private space, such as bedrooms and bathrooms. The platform asks hosts to “describe each device, its location and whether it will be turned off or on” in a host’s listing, but not all comply with this and many provide vague descriptions.
