Canastra cheese is elected the best in the world in an international ranking

The “cheese” from Minas Gerais is making a name for itself around the world. That’s because the Artisanal Canasta Cheese was elected the best in the world by the American website “Taste Atlas” and is the main highlight in the ranking of the 50 best cheeses in the world.

Considered a delicacy from Minas Gerais, Canastra cheese, which takes its name from Serra da Canastra, a region located in the southeast of Minas Gerais, was the best evaluated, leaving behind the traditional Grana Padano, Gorgonzola Piccante and Pecorino Sardo, among other internationally famous cheeses.

Canastra cheese is produced from raw cow’s milk, milked on the same property where the cheese dairy is located. In addition to having a special flavor, it also stands out for being one of the main representatives of Minas Gerais history and its preparation is passed on from generation to generation.

In 2008, the production method of Canastra Artesanal Cheese was recognized as a Intangible Cultural Heritage of Brazil by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN).

According to the Company of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension of the State of Minas Gerais (Emater-MG), the achievement is the result of the quality work carried out by Minas Gerais producers.

“We are very proud of the recognition of the quality of Minas cheeses, and in particular, at this moment, of Minas Artesanal Cheese, produced in the Canastra producing region. All of this is the result of a joint effort by the entire agricultural system in the state. Nobody does anything alone. We have to highlight the work of Emater, but also of the Agricultural Research Corporation (Epamig), of the Minas Gerais Agricultural Institute (IMA) and the coordination of the State Secretariat for Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Seapa)”, emphasizes the CEO. from Emater-MG, Otávio Maia.

For Seapa, the success of the Canastra Artesanal Cheese is in the hands of the producers.

“They (the rural producers) are the ones who carefully produce, with effort and dedication, a cheese so that it has more and more quality”, amended Gilson Sales, Seapa’s superintendent of supply and cooperativism.
