The candidate for mayor of the city of Buenos Aires Leandro Santoro (Unión por la Patria) confirmed, this Tuesday (23), that he will not contest the second electoral round against Jorge Macri (Juntos por el Cambio).
With the decision, Macri will be elected the new mayor of the Argentine capital.
Santoro’s campaign explains that the decision was taken because “the result that Jorge Macri will obtain will be just a few votes away from reaching the number established by the Constitution of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires to be elected head of government”.
Thus, they state that “it would be foolish to force a second round” and that efforts will be focused on “defending democracy against the authoritarian threat, helping Sergio Massa win in the city of Buenos Aires and be elected president of the Nation”.
Santoro, candidate of the governing coalition, obtained 32.2% of the votes in last Sunday’s elections (22), against the 49.61% obtained by Jorge Macri.
Macri is a cousin of former president Mauricio Macri, and as soon as he found out about Santoro’s decision, he wrote a message on his X account, formerly known as Twitter: “Congratulations Jorge!!! you were elected by half of the population of Buenos Aires as the next Head of Government of the City of Buenos Aires. I am sure that his motivation and experience will take the city to a new level.”
The city’s Constitution establishes that, unless a candidate obtains more than 50% of the votes in the first electoral round, a second round must be held, which in this case was scheduled for Sunday, November 19, the same date as the national second round between Sergio Massa and Javier Milei.
