Alone Nanni Moretti could make the Montée des Marches of the Cannes Film Festival the frame of a film by Nanni Moretti. It didn’t take him a lot of special effects to do it, just a song – I want to see you dance Of Franco Battiato – in the background and the complicity of its cast and producers. During the premiere of The sun of the futurein fact, Moretti has decided to kick off a small event within an event that immediately attracted the attention of the public and the photographers present in the stands: the recreation of that scene from the film in which all the workers raise their arms and rotate on themselves while Battiato sings.
Everyone responded to Nanni Moretti’s input – naturally organized -: the interpreters, from Margherita Buy to Valentina Romani, from Barbora Bobulova to Mathieu Amalric, up to the producer Domenico Procacci and the screenwriter Francesca Marciano. It is a simple, clean and linear moment, but which, made by Nanni Moretti, acquires a new meaning, capable of exerting a fascination all of him. Partly because certain flashes are never taken for granted at an important event like Cannes, and partly because Moretti has always had a fetish for musicals. Like when, in Aprilhad in mind to make a musical film starring a Trotskyite confectioner.
If France has always loved Nanni Moretti – the last Italian, let us remember, to have won the Palme d’Or in 2001 for Son’s room – the reason is obvious: that pinch of controlled madness, never too exuberant and never too subdued, which is lacking in certain cinemas and certain cliques. The same madness that led Nanni to record a small video on Instagram in 2021 in which he and the cast were preparing to land in Cannes with Three floors singing Money by Mahmood and the same one who, at the end of the screening of Il sol dell’avvenire, led him to remove the tag with his name from the armchair to stick it on his chest like a banner.
