Cannes 2023: the hottest beauty trends straight from the red carpet

On the luxurious French Riviera, the Cannes Film Festival is perhaps the event more chic of the film calendar and similarly, Cannes beauty looks are known for their no-nonsense glamour.

The annual event that strategically falls before summer is a celebration of the art of cinema and an opportunity to showcase the best films and new releases, but not only. The festival has helped launch the careers of leading actors, directors and producers, and the event’s top prize, the Palme d’Or, is one of the most coveted in the industry.

The fact that it takes place on the glittering French Riviera, with its luxurious motor yachts, sumptuous hotels and exquisite food, and that the festival lasts for two weeks each May, give me an excuse to travel there to star watching and also to discover the beauty trends that will dominate the summer. Although Cannes glam tends to lean towards the timeless classics, there is never a shortage of avant-garde and experimental moments of beauty.

Here are our 2023 Cannes favorites.

Jelly lip gloss

Not a fan of matte lips? Don’t worry, we’ve seen plenty of jelly-like, high-gloss lip looks in fruity shades from coral, tangerine, berry and peach. It’s a fun and fresh look for summer, but it can come off as surprisingly delicate and elegant, as she demonstrated Jennifer Lawrence on the red carpet.

Bare lids and bold lips

We don’t believe in beauty rules, but the whole lips or eyes thing makes so much more sense when pushed to the extreme like it did Iris Law. The model opted for completely bare lids and a thin coat of mascara, before going all-in with dark red lips that stole the show.

Sea fog hair

Wet-effect hair is nothing new, but it is a summer suggestion. The elegant bob of Laura Harrierslightly misted by the sea breeze, is very fitting for the coastal location of Cannes, but would be just as incredible for summer in the city.

Subdued monochrome

Monochromatic beauty looks have been trending in recent seasons with uniform and coordinated shades on the eyes, lips and cheeks. Gigi Hadid she eschewed traditionally summery tones in favor of a monochromatic makeup in cool 90s brown shades for her memorable Cannes appearance.

Softly smoky eyes

Smoky eyes can be a bit heavy in summer, but not if veiled and fluffy like those proposed by Blackpink Rosé. All the drama is concentrated along the upper lash line before wafting in a soft, subtle mist.

Tie-dye hair color

Proof of the fact that even the occasions elegant should never be taken too seriously, the blue tie-dye hairstyle by Helen Mirren, which brings to life a modern rebellious Marie Antoinette is adorable. The shade chosen by the mermaid refers to one of the major summer trends: mermaidcore.

Mermaid waves

Speaking of mermaidcore, one of the most signature moves of this trend are mermaid waves and Naomi Campbell was front and center to show us how to do it with XXL curled waves that Ariel would 100 approve of.

The giant eyeliner

If you love the winged eyeliner look, step it up a notch like Ashlee Simpsonwho wore bold black eyeliner to complement her black gown at Cannes.

Lived hair

Lily-Rose Depp she may have kept it stylish in a black tweed Chanel mini dress, but her hair up and smudged kohl eyeliner kept the look fresh, relaxed and oh so wearable. Plus, we love that she capitalized on her natural texture.

XXL bangs

Don’t think bangs are perfect for summer? Dua Lipa brought the drama of an XXL fringe to the red carpet, with a length that flared across the cheeks and fell somewhere between a grown fringe and a curtain fringe. She created the perfect setting for a flirtatious peek at the sultry silver smoked eyeshadow she wore on her eyes.
