Cannes Film Festival 2021: from the return of Nanni Moretti to the Palme d’Or to Jodie Foster

After the edition canceled due to the pandemic and the stamp applied on various titles such as Soul e The French Dispatch, the Cannes Film Festival 2021 restarts in attendance with an edition exceptionally moved from May to July (from 6 to 17), but equally full of titles and prominent stars. The news that interests us most is that Three floors by Nanni Moretti will be, as someone had already anticipated last year, in competition in the official selection and then landed in theaters on 23 September for 01 Distribution.

The film, the first based on a non-original subject by Moretti, will be in good company: this year, to see it on the Croisette, there will be 24 titles, three of which directed by women (Mia Hansen-Løve, Catherine Corsini and Julia Ducournau), a record if we consider that in 74 editions of the Festival, only one won, Jane Campion in 1993.

“Some films chose to wait for us and we found them again. In a lot of places, filming didn’t stop, so there was a great offer from which to be able to choose: 2,300 films were registered, a record, ”explained the director of the Festival Thierry Frémaux, who announced, among others, the presence of The French Dispatch, Wes Anderson’s highly anticipated latest film starring Benicio del Toro, Frances McDormand, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Timothée Chalamet, Léa Seydoux, Owen Wilson and Bill Murray that someone hoped would go to Venice; of Benedetta, Paul Verhoeven’s film about homosexual nuns; of Everything went well of François Ozon, of A hero by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi and veteran Jacques Audiard with Paris 13th District. However, Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, who in 2010 had won the Palme d’Or with Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, with Memory con Tilda Swinton; the Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi, winner of the Golden Bear in Berlin for On Body and Soul of 2017, which in Cannes competes with The Story of My Wife; e Sean Penn, which on the Croisette proposes Flag Day, a thriller that sees him in the lead role alongside Katheryn Winnick, Miles Teller and Josh Brolin.

Besides Bergman Island by Mia Hansen-Love; Ha’Berech by Navid Lapid will return to Cannes and Drive My Car di Ryusuke Hamacuchi, eyes are also on Annette, the new film by Leos Carax with Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver which will open Cannes 2021. The film tells the story between a singer and a stand-up comedian and her profound transformation after the birth of her first child. And if in competition we will also see Titanium by Julia Ducournau, Petrov’s Flu di Kirill Serebrennikov, High and loud (Casablanca Beats) by Nabil Ayouch, The Worst Person in the World by Joachim Trier e The divide by Catherine Corsini, out of competition here are some prestigious US titles including Stillwater by Tom McCarthy with Matt Damon and the documentary The Velvet Underground directed by Todd Haynes. In the Un Certain Regard section they compete among others The Innocents by Eskil Vogt, After Yang in Kogonada, Commitment Hasan dei Hasan Semih Kaplanoglu, Fire night by Tatiana Huezo, Good mother by Hafsia Herzi e Work del regista Alexey German Jr..

The president of the jury that will award the Palme d’Or will be, as announced last year, director Spike Lee, while Jodie Foster will receive the Palme d’Or for Lifetime Achievement during the opening ceremony scheduled for 6 July. For the two-time Oscar-winning actress, it is a special award, given that her debut as an actress was at the Cannes Film Festival on the occasion of the presentation of Taxi Driver (1976), winner of the Palme d’Or. At the time Foster was only 13, but many bet that that face and those icy eyes would have come a long way. On the logistical front, it is in the organization’s interest to ensure that the event can take place in the most serene and controlled way possible: on June 9, France should welcome all travelers from international countries, including the United States, but concerns about a new variant led the Elysée to tighten restrictions for visitors coming from the UK. We live, as we know, for the day, but it is certain that, after the forced stop of 2020, Cannes has a great desire to breathe cinema again.
