Cannes Film Festival: remember award-winning films at the event

The 75th edition of Cannes Film Festival is already rolling and continues until the 28th of May, on the French Riviera.

At each red carpet, the event welcomes movie and arts stars and a large audience, which only confirms the grandeur of what is one of the biggest awards in the film industry.

The festival usually gives visibility to several productions of the season. The official selection has 50 films and 21 compete for the main prize of the night: the Palm of Gold. Productions from several countries make the list, mainly Europeans, but also Canada, South Korea, the United States, Japan, Iran and Russia.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is among the highlights of this edition and despite not competing for any award, it marked the return of Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise ) to the big screen and was applauded for five minutes at the festival.

Another production that had a special screening at the festival and already has a premiere date in Brazil is “Elvis”, by Baz Luhrmann. The feature is a biopic of the king of rock and features AAustin Butler, Tom Hanks and Olivia DeJonge in the cast.

While the films competing for the Palme d’Or at Cannes don’t make it to the big screen, remember the big winners of the most recent editions.

The French Chronicle (2021)

Even without taking the Palme d’Or, “The French Chronicle”, by Wes Anderson, was the highlight of the 74th edition last year. The film was applauded for nine minutes by the audience.

The production features Adrien Brody, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Tilda Swinton and more stars in the cast.

The feature narrates three stories that take place in the newsroom of an American newspaper in France. It’s available on Netflix

Parasite (2019)

The big winner of the Palme d’Or in 2019 – and also of the Oscars – became a great success and made history in the film industry.“Parasite” collects awards and records.

The film follows a poor South Korean family, who see an opportunity to work in various roles in the home of a wealthy family. The film is covered in plot twists.

Bacurau (2019)

The Brazilian film “Bacurau” made history at Cannes and took home the Jury Prize in 2019.

The feature follows the residents of the small village of the Brazilian backlands, which gives the film its name, discover that the community is no longer on any map. Gradually, they notice something strange in the region: while drones roam the skies, foreigners arrive in the city.

When cars are shot at and corpses begin to appear, one group comes to the conclusion that they are being attacked. To fight the enemy, they collectively create a means of defense.

Family Matter (2018)

“Family Matter” was the big winner of the Palme d’Or in 2018.

The Japanese film follows a rather peculiar Japanese family, who live off petty theft. An incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them.

BlacKkKlansman (2018)

“BlacKkKlansman”, by Spike Lee, won the Grand Prize, a category that rewards the film with the greatest originality or research spirit, at the 71st edition of the festival.

The film takes place in 1978 and tells the story of Ron Stallworth, a black police officer who manages to infiltrate the Klu Klux Klan, a white supremacist movement.

Through letters and phone calls, he gets close to the leader of the group and, when presence is necessary, sends his partner in his place, a white policeman. After months of investigation, Ron becomes close to the cult leader, being responsible for sabotaging a series of lynchings and other hate crimes orchestrated by the group.
