Cannes winner, “Anora” leads nominations at the Gotham Awards, but is snubbed

The winner of the 2024 Palme d’Or, “Anora” led the Gotham Awards nominations an award that recognizes the best films, filmmakers and actors in independent cinema, but left the ceremony held in New York on Monday (2) no prizes .

The production competed in four categories: Best Film, Protagonist (Mikey Madison), Supporting Role (Yura Borisov) and Director (Sean Baker). Titles such as “A Different Man”, “Sing Sing” and “Nickel Boys” won the prizes, respectively. See all the winners here.

“Anora” tells the story of a sex worker who impulsively decides to marry a young Russian man. However, as the family of the groom, who is the son of a Russian oligarch, begins to investigate Anora’s life, her dream of a happy ending is threatened.

The film is the most recent project by Sean Baker filmmaker known for his work on “Tangerina” (2015) and “Projeto Florida” (2017). The feature film was shown at the São Paulo International Exhibition and hits Brazilian cinemas on January 23rd .
