Canon has announced a firmware update for the EOS R5 and EOS R6 (v1.4) and the EOS-1D X Mark III (v1.5). According to the manufacturer, it is “designed with user feedback and opens up new possibilities for professional video shooting” using the listed cameras.
In particular, the new firmware adds the Canon Log 3 (C-Log 3) profile already available on the EOS R5 to the EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III. It expands the dynamic range and the choice of color space adjustment options. C-Log 3 also makes it easy to integrate these cameras into filmmaking workflows by color-aligning footage shot with them with footage shot with the Cinema EOS series cameras.
In addition, the update expands the recording capabilities on two cards, adding the mode of recording one and the same video file simultaneously on both memory cards, to be safe in case one of them failed. The EOS-1D X Mark III and EOS R5 now support CFexpress VPG400 cards with a guaranteed minimum write speed of 400Mbps, required for 8K or RAW video shooting, after installing the update.
In the case of the EOS R5, the update makes the camera compatible with the lenses CN E18–80mm T4.4 L IS KAS S and CN E70–200mm T4.4 L IS KAS S Cine-Servo, adds the ability to shoot full-frame 8K video (at 30 fps c) and 5K ProRes RAW cropped video when connected to an Atomos Ninja V + recorder, and 5K ProRes RAW cropped video when using an Atomos Ninja V recorder.
The update is now available for the Canon EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III and will be released for the EOS R5 this summer.
