Capital of Rio has 94 suspected cases of Ômicron

Rio de Janeiro is investigating 94 suspected cases of the Ômicron variant of the new coronavirus. The information was released this Thursday (30) by the Municipal Health Department of Rio (SMS).

For now, the city has only one confirmed case of the new strain, recognized on December 20th. The patient had taken both doses of Pfizer and had only mild symptoms. On the 24th, there were 28 cases under investigation in the capital.

According to the SMS note, some samples will be sent to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) for genomic sequencing in order to check whether any patient is infected with the Ômicron variant.

The city’s Center for Strategic Information on Health Surveillance (Cievs) is investigating and monitoring the cases. So far, all patients are monitored and have mild symptoms. None needed to be hospitalized.

Last week, the Municipal Health Department of Rio identified an increase in the positive index of tests for Covid-19, rising from 0.7% to 5.5%.

Currently, according to CNN Agency, Brazil registers 116 confirmed cases of the Ômicron variant. Another 119 suspected cases await genomic sequencing.
