Capitol Attack: A year later, Biden speaks of a battle between democracy and authoritarianism

“I will not let anyone put the knife to the neck of democracy” of the USA: Joe Biden delivered a speech on Thursday 25 minutes with heavy content in an unprecedented tone, blaming his predecessor, Donald Trump on the personal, for the attack on Donald Trump from one year.

He accused him of “trying to prevent a peaceful transfer of power” by instigating an “armed uprising” to prevent the US Congress from ratifying the 2020 election results.

The former Republican president reacted not with one, not with two, but with three announcements, in an orgy style, certifying – if there was any doubt – that the anniversary events were anything but reconciling the Americans, on the contrary, they sharpened the political controversy.

“Joe Biden” used my name to try to divide America even more, “said Donald Trump. “This political theater has the sole purpose of diverting attention from the fact that Biden has completely and utterly failed.”

In fact, the Democratic president never uttered the name of Donald Trump, preferring to refer to him as “the former president” and “the defeated former president”, certainly aware of the fact that these formalities would make enraged the billionaire.

Mr. Biden put aside his usual intimacy, speaking in a very harsh tone in his speech at the “hall of statues” of Congress – where, on January 6, 2021, supporters of his predecessor paraded.

The 79-year-old Democrat in his full-frontal attack on his former president accused him of “creating and expanding a web of lies for the 2020 elections”, that he did it because “he prefers power to have principles”, because “his injured ego cuts him more than our democracy “.

On the other hand, the former president insisted again yesterday that in the 2020 elections his victory was “stolen”, something for which he never presented evidence.

“Never forget the crime of the 2020 presidential election. Never give up,” Donald Trump urged his supporters.

“Will we become a nation that accepts that political violence is the norm?” asked Joe Biden, who insisted that the United States was involved, inside and outside its borders, in a “battle” between “democracy” and “authoritarianism.”

“I did not pursue this battle,” said Biden, who according to a recent poll found that only 55% of Americans believe he was the real winner of the 2020 election.

But “I will not let anyone put the knife to the throat of democracy” in America, he insisted.

Asked by reporters if he thought he was deepening the division in the United States with his speech, the president said “when you want to recover, you have to recognize the severity of the injury.”

In terms of tone at least, Joe Biden broke up yesterday. From the beginning of his term, he ignores when he does not despise Donald Trump and his followers, preferring to rely on the pragmatism and the ambitious program of economic reforms that he promotes to reconcile the Americans.

But his presidency seems to be stuck in the mud: his reforms have been partially blocked in Congress, the pandemic has returned sharply, inflation is frightening the Americans and the head of state, with his popularity in the nadir, is failing to capitalize on it. marginal majority of Democrats in both houses of the US Congress, in the absence of coherence in the ranks of his party.

“Worship”

As for reconciliation, it seems to be moving further and further away.

On the other side of the political spectrum, after all, the absence of almost all Republican electors from the congressional events organized by Congress yesterday confirmed, if nothing else, how wide Donald Trump’s influence remains in the party.

No Republicans were present during the minute of silence in the Senate. In the other House of Representatives, just two front-line Republicans, former Vice President Dick Cheney and his daughter, lawmaker Liz Cheney, who has broken up with Donald Trump, made their appearance.

Ms Cheney warned that a party based on “personalism” was “dangerous to the country” in her statements to reporters as she left.

None of the Republican barons took part in the night rally in front of the Capitol, which concluded the memorial service.

From a distance, several GOP executives echoed the same criticism: that the White House “instrumentalized” the anniversary events.

The leader of the Republicans in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, spoke in February 2021 about the “moral responsibility” of the former president in the events of January 6. But yesterday, he issued a statement accusing Democrats of “taking advantage” of the anniversary, “to advance their political goals.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSadis has said the Capitol ceremonies are “disgusting.”

Senator Lindsey Graham – who has changed his stance on Donald Trump several times, criticizing him and then becoming a passionate supporter – denounced the “irreversible politicization of January 6 by President Man”.

The next federal election in the United States will be held in November, when Republicans may regain control of at least one, if not both, House of Representatives. If this scenario materializes, Joe Biden will see his ability to push for reforms virtually nullify for two years, as the likely rematch with Donald Trump.
