A year after the invasion of the US Capitol, which’s shaken the American republic, President Joe Biden will today, Thursday, denounce the “special responsibility” of Donald Trump’s predecessor for the “chaos” of January 6, 2021, the Psaki.
The Democratic president will speak inside Congress, in an area invaded by thousands of supporters of his predecessor, an attack that was watched with astonishment by the whole world.
Joe Biden “sees on January 6 the tragic culmination of what they did in the country during Trump’s four years in office,” Ms. Psaki said on the eve of his speech.
He told the press that he expected “President Biden to report on what happened at the Capitol and the particular responsibility of (former) President Trump for the chaos.”
He will “strongly denounce the lie spread by the former president”, who still claims, without any proof, that he won the 2020 elections, the White House spokeswoman added.
The tone of the American presidency now seems to be much harsher.
Buffalo horns
There was another sign that the Biden administration was toughening its stance: Justice Secretary Merrick Garland promised on Wednesday that all those involved in the attack would face prosecution, “regardless of status”.
This puts even more pressure on Donald Trump, who a few hours before the attack electrified the crowd that had gathered despite the polar cold, calling on him to march on Congress.
The buffalo horned protester, the young man who admitted to stealing a beer from the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives … More than 725 supporters of the former president who stormed the Congress headquarters have been arrested. Many others saw FBI agents knocking on their doors.
At the same time, a special committee of inquiry of the House of Representatives is conducting an investigation to shed light specifically on the role of Donald Trump and his environment in this attack.
Reversing stern
The former president slammed the stern: he announced that he was canceling the press conference he had announced he would give today from his luxurious club in Florida, an initiative which was perceived as a challenge by the Democrats, while he seemed to embarrass Re executives.
But the irritable billionaire does not soften his stance. He once again revolted this week against the “fraud” that he said was committed in the 2020 presidential election, won by Joe Biden, without presenting the slightest evidence of it.
Two Republicans close to Donald Trump are scheduled to take the floor instead to give, as they put it, the “Republican response” to the anniversary events.
In the party, however, despite the former president retaining enormous influence, the majority of elected officials preferred to keep a low profile.
Mitch McConnell, baron of the faction, the powerful leader of the GOP parliamentary group in the Senate, who a few days after the attack accused Donald Trump of “inciting” his followers to march towards Congress, announced that he will not be present at the anniversary ceremony in Washington: informed that he should go to a funeral in the southern USA.
Very far from the Capitol, where the members of the Senate and the House of Representatives have been invited to gather in the evening (at 00:30 on Friday, Greek time).
A year after the unprecedented images of clashes in front of the Capitol and the parade of Donald Trump supporters inside the emblematic building of the American Republic, the tensions and divisions around the event are holding the American population well.
According to a poll presented on Wednesday by the news website Axios, only 55% of US citizens believe that Joe Biden is indeed the undisputed winner of the 2020 elections.
Almost an equal percentage believe that events such as those of January 6, 2021 are likely to be repeated in the coming years.
“Our great nation is now acrobatically on the brink of a deepening precipice,” former President Jimmy Carter warned in an article published in the New York Times on Wednesday. “Unless action is taken immediately,” he added, “we are in real danger of experiencing civil strife and losing our precious democracy.”
