Sometimes even superheroes need to be rescued. That’s because a police officer from Colorado, in the United States, helped “Captain America” after the hero’s motorcycle broke down on the way to an event at the local children’s hospital last Wednesday (18).
Matt Gnojek, who was dressed as the Avenger, is known locally as Captain Colorado. He had planned to make an appearance at the hospital’s holiday parade when a motorcycle engine failure left him “stranded” on the shoulder of the highway south of Denver.
Then Douglas County Deputy Zach Zepeski encountered Gnojek while he was on patrol.
“I just wanted him to focus on being safe,” Zepeski told CNN.
The man dressed as a superhero pointed out to the deputy that his insurance did not cover the cost of a tow and mentioned that he was in contact with a friend to secure a ride.
Intrigued by Gnojek’s “military-style” attire and motorcycle, the officer asked where he was going. When he found out about his destination, he took action.
Part of the encounter was captured on body camera footage released by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Look:
Deputy Zach Zepeski offered to pay the cost of the tow and waited for the truck to arrive, ensuring the motorcycle was taken to a safe location while Gnojek and his friend made arrangements to pick up the vehicle.
“I went to some of these parades for the kids and seeing the smiles on their faces… it’s just incredible,” said Zepeski.
“He’s doing this out of the goodness of his heart, he just wants to make people smile, and if I can do anything to help with that, that’s all I need,” he added.
However, Gnojek was unable to arrive in time for the parade.
Still, he participated in several other events, including the “Shop with a Cop” weekend event hosted by the Zepeski Sheriff’s Office. The event provided gift cards for low-income children to purchase Christmas gifts.
“I couldn’t be more grateful [a Zepeski] — thanks to him, I can go and do all these events, visit the children and bring more people together for the cause”, commented the “superhero” to CNN.
Superhero raising funds for good causes
Captain Colorado, Gnojek’s superhero persona, raises funds for families fighting pediatric cancer through the organization Cap for Kids. He also visits hospitals, refugee centers and events for veterans, Gnojek said.
Zepeski’s act of kindness received praise on social media, with some users offering to help cover the costs of the tow. He declined these offers.
“I hope that instead of paying me back, they donate to [o Capitão Colorado] or to any kind of children’s fund or charity that they find it in their hearts to donate to,” he highlighted.
“I would rather it be for them than for me,” he concluded.
