Captain dies from “The ship of love”

Theatrical, television and film actor Gavin McLeod, who became known to the general public as the captain of the popular series “The Ship of Love”, passed away on Saturday at the age of 90.

According to the APE-MPE, his death was confirmed in the American soubise magazine Variety by his nephew Mark C., without clarifying the cause. He has been facing serious health problems lately.

Gavin McLeod, who played mostly supporting roles, became rather unexpectedly famous by incarnating Captain Stumping on the luxury cruise ship Pacific Princess, whose passengers, sometimes stars in the caliber of Gene Kelly, were tangled in a rope.

The TV series, which was considered rather ridiculous by critics, nevertheless proved to be extremely popular, lasting 11 seasons and inspiring various films.

“Critics hated her, described her as crazy TV,” the actor recalled in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in 2013.

He also played the role of the sarcastic, eloquent news editor on the 1970s comedy television series “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” which is considered a classic.

He battled alcoholism for much of his career. He had four children from his first marriage, which ended in divorce, and three children from his second.
