A car with an elderly couple fell into a crater on BR-470, in Santa Catarina (SC), in the early hours of this Monday (14). The hole was opened after the asphalt gave way completely due to heavy rains that hit the region. The Fire Department was called at around 5 am, following reports of erosion in Rio do Sul, a municipality about 200 kilometers from the capital Florianópolis.
According to firefighters, the road had already given way when the car fell into the crater. The National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) signaled and advised drivers to stabilize the situation on the highways when the accident occurred. The couple would not have noticed the warnings.
