A new caravan of immigrants left the city of Tapachula, on the southern border of Mexico, this Thursday (12) with the aim of reaching the United States before Donald Trump’s inauguration.
Around 3,000 migrants from countries such as Venezuela, Honduras, Haiti and Cuba are rushing to Mexico’s northern border with the intention of crossing into the US in light of the adverse living conditions they face in their home countries and fearing stricter measures to request asylum.
Trump has promised mass deportations and a sweeping crackdown on immigration as soon as he takes office on January 20.
Nestor Pina, a Venezuelan immigrant walking in the new caravan, appealed to Trump for empathy, asking him to “think with his heart.”
Others, like Honduran immigrant Gilberto Rosales, admitted that they had never considered leaving their homeland, but were forced to do so due to the economic difficulties and political situation in those countries.
These trips to the United States often pose serious risks. Many of them are extorted, beaten, raped, forced to commit crimes and even killed.
