Developed by the German start up Carbon Mobile, Carbon 1 MK II is the new thinnest and lightest smartphone made of carbon fiber, which is inspired by the principles of Bauhaus movement, in which form follows function, remaining faithful to the properties of the materials.
With Carbon 1 MK II, art, design and innovation don’t just find their function in one sstate-of-the-art martphones but also wink at sustainability, an increasingly important value in any production process regardless of the final product.
Thanks to the use of carbon fiber, already used in sectors such as aeronautics and automotive, but never before in the smartphone industry, the engineers of Carbon Mobile have managed to obtain a monocoque design and a total weight of only 125g – or 33% less compared to the average of smartphones available on the market today. A real featherweight.
Furthermore, Carbon 1 MK II is made with proprietary technology Hybrid Radio Enabled Composite Material (HyRECM), a type of fiber of lightweight and ultra-strong carbon, but also radiolucent to get around the obstacle that has so far made this material unsuitable for the development of mobile devices.
Carbon 1 MK II is also one smartphone with a green soul, as it is produced with less than 10% plastic and the 33% less materials commonly used for conventional devices. This means that if all mobile devices were made from these materials, they could save 100,000 tons of resources every year.
Carbon Mobile has not only paid attention to the type of materials, but has also focused on labor value taking care of the design details of each device. The life of each device begins with an expert engineer who cuts the carbon fiber material by hand and takes care of the entire molding process, creating a handmade device.
If we then take a look at the design of Carbon 1 MK II we can certainly see how this is strongly inspired by principles of the Bauhaus, an art school of the early twentieth century that sought to combine artistic creation with industrial production, thus giving the same importance to the aesthetics of an object and its functional characteristics. And this is precisely the concept behind the smartphone – awarded with the Red Dot Design Award and awarded the JEC Composites Connect – Innovation Award in the design category -, which is characterized by a minimal but functional aesthetic, which does not compromise performance.
