The President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, reaffirmed this Tuesday (17) that international trade is essential for countries to achieve carbon neutrality.
Thus, according to her, it is necessary to guarantee efficient trade so that the goals are achieved and to accelerate work on new free trade agreements, “such as with Mercosur”, she mentioned.
However, the leader criticized China, which, according to her, “heavily subsidizes its industry”, restricting access to its market by companies from the European Union (EU). “We need to be competitive.”
China has openly encouraged energy-intensive companies in Europe and elsewhere to reallocate all or part of their production,” he argued. “The EU needs to focus on risk reduction rather than separating from China. We need to keep working with it”, pondered Von der Leyen, in a speech at the World Economic Forum, in Davos.
Von der Leyen also commented that the EU will temporarily adapt its state aid rules to speed up and simplify aid to green industry and combat the risks of foreign subsidy relocation. “Climate change needs to be addressed globally but fairly,” he said.
According to her, Europeans have a plan to reach carbon neutrality. “The history of a clean economy will be written in Europe”, she pointed out.
Finally, the president of the European Commission also commented on the war in Ukraine: “we will not reduce our support for Ukraine”, she guaranteed.
