Cardi B was the queen of costume changes at the American Music Awards 2021

When it comes to the awards, it’s not uncommon to see presenters changing their clothes at night. For many masters of ceremonies, it’s also an opportunity to have fun with fashion – like when Doja Cat donned her memorable “worm” costume at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, or when Ellen DeGeneres appeared in the iconic Björk Swan Dress during the 2001 Emmy performance.

At the American Music Awards this Sunday night (21), it was Cardi B’s turn to offer her presenter-worthy take on fashion — and she didn’t skimp on dramatic flair or costume changes.

The rapper set the tone on the red carpet wearing a dramatic knitted veil and black dress from Schiaparelli, a couture house known for its surrealist approach to fashion. Her accessories – golden mask, bold earrings, gloves and long nails – completed the look.

There was more to come. Her elaborate headdresses, including a feathered garment that ran down her back to the floor and a fan-shaped accessory, matched a black dress and a black and white corset outfit, respectively. At one point, the performer posed wearing a black blazer with angled silver shoulders and shiny boots, which caught the light as she moved.

Velvet and glitter showed up in several outfits – including a royal purple dress with massive feathered shoulders and a more lustrous chest piece made of dangling crystals. Even in a more casual look, a Schiaparelli denim jacket was adorned with gold and jeweled details, and worn with large earrings bearing the brand’s eye motif.

While acting as a presenter, Cardi B was also nominated in several categories, and ended up winning a victory for Favorite Hip-Hop Song with the track “Up”. She wore her brightest outfit, a lime green dress with a flowing cape, to receive the award.

To top it off, she posed with her award at the end of the night wearing an all-white proposal. She smiled at the cameras from beneath a sculptural hood, embellished with a crystal finish and fireworks details. Underneath, she wore a long dress with a thigh-length split and a pair of satin platform heels.

The presenter was not the only star to perform a tailoring show at the awards. “Deja Vu” singer Olivia Rodrigo, who was the most nominated artist of the night, won the New Artist of the Year award wearing a sequined David Koma dress.
