Cardinal: Fast Conclave shows that Francis left “more united” church

Cardinal Arthur Roche, a British religious who participated in the conclave, told the CNN That “it is clear, for the speed with which Pope Leo XIV’s election was held, that Pope Francis made the church more united than the pessimists would give him credit.”

“I suggest that otherwise no other organization would have been able to elect a world leader so quickly,” said Roche, who leads the Vatican liturgy office.

“The Hermeneutics of Reform in Continuity, which clearly marked the last five pontificates since the Second Vatican Council, will also be seen as continuous in this one now begins,” he said, alluding to how there were reforms in recent pads, but with continuity in the foundations of the doctrine.

Leo XIV, who was quickly elected on the second day of the conclave, should continue the church’s reforms promoted by Francis, as well as its focus on poverty and marginalized people.

“In Pope Lion we have a pastor with proven pastoral, theological and administrative experience, coupled with human and spiritual qualities that warm warm and do not alienate,” added Roche.
