Cargo theft grew again in Brazil in 2021, says association

A survey by the National Association of Cargo Transport and Logistics (NTC&Logística) points out that cargo thefts increased by 1.7% in the country in 2021. It was the first increase since 2017 and, in total, the financial loss reaches R$ 1.27 billion.

According to the Association, the total number of registrations increased from 14,150 in 2020 to 14,400 last year.

The region with the highest number of occurrences was the Southeast, with 82% of cases. Then comes the South region with 6.82%, followed by the Northeast with 5.44%, the Midwest with 3.66% and the North with 1.42%.

According to the president of NTC&Logística, Francisco Pelucio, “since 2017, when we recorded the highest number of robberies in recent years, the data began to fall year after year. Even so, we always make it clear to society as a whole that the problem still greatly impacts the costs of carriers, after all, there are still thousands of occurrences happening. Therefore, we work together with public security authorities and the federal government to reduce these numbers year after year”.

The goods most targeted by gangs and criminal groups are food, fuel, pharmaceuticals, auto parts, materials from the textile and apparel sector, cigarettes, electronics, beverages and pesticides, according to the survey.

The Association highlights that, in 2016, Complementary Law nº 121/06 was approved, which established the National System to combat theft and theft of cargo.

“It took us 25 years, since the text was first drafted, in 1997, to achieve it. Thanks to it, we have much more human and technological resources at our disposal to collect data, identify the reasons behind the occurrences and propose integrated solutions to the Executive Power and to the national and state police. Thus, although we have a lot of work to do, we are in a privileged position in history to deal with this challenge”, said the vice president of security at NTC&Logística, Roberto Mira.

For Mira, the increase in robberies is largely due to the return of economic activity, hampered by the pandemic. “The return of activities would inevitably increase the flow of goods on the highways and, consequently, thefts and cargo theft. Especially with high inflation, due to internal and external factors, certain products have become very valuable and attractive to organized groups”, he assesses.
