Despite the improvement in the epidemiological situation in the city of Rio de Janeiro, whose positivity rate for Covid-19 dropped from 47% to 8%, the city hall must expand restrictions on the movement of unvaccinated tourists during the Carnival holiday.
The charge for the vaccine passport will take place at all events, including private ones, and will also include the booster dose, for those over 50 years old.
“Rio de Janeiro is a city that hopes not to receive unvaccinated tourists. Unvaccinated tourists will find it very difficult to circulate in the city of Rio de Janeiro, because it is forbidden to host unvaccinated tourists, it is forbidden to circulate in tourist spots and it is forbidden to enter parties, theaters, cinemas without the vaccine. And the booster dose will also be required for people over 50 years old”, said the municipal secretary of health, Daniel Soranz.
According to the ministry, the 670,000 cariocas who are overdue for their third dose represent a concern, since 88% of patients hospitalized in the municipal public network in January had not taken the booster. In addition, 46% of them had not taken any dose against Covid-19. Among those not vaccinated, there were 46 children between 5 and 11 years old.
“Our biggest concern is the circulation of people who have not been vaccinated because they have a much greater risk of becoming seriously ill and being hospitalized for Covid-19. So, the city will make it as difficult as possible for the movement of people who have not been vaccinated”, reinforced the secretary.
According to Soranz, tourists can get vaccinated in Rio if they have already taken the second dose more than four months ago. “No need to prove address. You can get to one of the 240 stations and get vaccinated,” he said.
