Carl Philip and Sofia of Sweden parents for the third time: it is a boy

After the son of Eugenie of York and that of Zara Phillips, 2021 brought a new royal baby: was born the third child of Carl Philip and Sofia of Sweden, another male later Alexander, 5 years next April, and Gabriel, 3.

The baby was born at 11.19 on Friday 26 March in Stockholm, and like his mother he is in excellent health. The news came with an official press release from the palace, also shared via social media, and for the moment, as usual, the name has not yet been made known, which will certainly arrive within a few days.

The new parents have left the Danderyd hospital a few hours after the birth of the child, the eighth grandchild of King Carl Gustav and Queen Silvia. The eldest daughter Victoria, heir to the throne, is the mother of Estelle, second in line of succession, and of Oscar, while the third daughter Madeleine, like her brother, has three children: Leonor, Nicolas and Adrienne.

The new arrival in the family is the first Bernadotte baby born after the decision that in 2019 deprived the king’s grandchildren of the title of “Royal Highness” that had been conferred on them at birth. A choice shared in full by the parents, who said they were happy that their children could grow up free, without obligations towards the crown. A turning point also supported by economic reasons: too many titles mean an excessive weight in terms of maintenance costs. The children are still too young to know the path they will take when they grow up, but they will certainly represent a new generation of little royals, freer than ever.
