The separatist MEP and former President of Catalonia Carles Puigdemon, who has been living in exile in Belgium since 2017 after the attempt to secede from Catalonia that year, was arrested yesterday Thursday in Italy, his lawyer announced.
«President Putzdemon was arrested on arrival in Sardinia, where he had gone as an MEP“, Gonzalo Boge’s lawyer stressed via Twitter, clarifying that his arrest was made under a European arrest warrant issued on October 14, 2019.
The information was confirmed by Mr. Putzdemon’s office.
In March, the European Parliament stripped the Catalan leader of his immunity from 2019.
Spanish justice accuses the Catalan leader of insurgency, as he claims that he contributed to the organization of the independence referendum in 2017 that was declared illegal by the courts.
According to his office, Carles Putzdemon traveled to Alghero from Brussels yesterday to visit the Adifolk international exhibition, to meet with the governor of Sardinia and others.
«When he arrived at Alghero airport, he was stopped by the Italian border guard” and today will be brought “before an appellate court” which “has jurisdiction to decide whether to release him or extradite him” to Spain, at the same time.a source.
