Carlos the Jackal: He is on trial for the third time for the grenade attack on a store in Paris

Forty-seven years after the bloody terrorist attack on the Drugstore Publicis in Paris, the third trial of Ilyich Ramirez Sanchez, known as Carlos the Jackal, who has twice been sentenced to life in prison for the attack, began today at the Special Criminal Court in the French capital.

The new trial, ordered in November 2019 by the Court of Appeals, will last three days and will only concern the size of the sentence, since the guilt of the accused has been finally decided by the French justice.

White hair and mustache, mask under the jaw, dark suit Carlos sat in the chair smiling, greeting the familiar faces he saw around him.

“I have been on forced leave in France for twenty-seven and a half years,” said the “anti-imperialist” terrorist of the 1970s and 1980s, who has been imprisoned in France since 1994 after escaping for twenty years.

The self-proclaimed “professional revolutionary”, now 71 years old, then protested against the physical search he underwent when he arrived at the courthouse and assured that since the beginning of his imprisonment in France, nothing illegal has been found on him “.

In March 2017 he was sentenced to life in prison for the attack

Carlos, who is on trial for the last time, was sentenced in March 2017 to life in prison for the grenade attack on the Drugstore Publicis store in Paris. His sentence was upheld a year later in the second instance.

However, the Court of Appeals partially overturned the decision of the Criminal Court, which had found Carlos guilty of murder and attempted murder through an explosive device, but also of transporting a grenade without a legal reason and referred the case only to determine its duration. .

The attack on the Drugstore Publicis, with 2 dead and 34 wounded, took place on September 15, 1974 in Paris: at 5:10 p.m.

Carlos commanded the FPLP Foreign Operations Wing and was active in Europe.

Carlos has twice been sentenced to life in prison by a French court for triple murder in 1975 in Paris and for four bombings in France in 1982 and 1983 (11 dead and 191 wounded).
