If 100 people were asked to name an internationally known terrorist, it is certain that all of them would recall Ilitch Ramirez Sanchez, better known as “Carlos, the jackal». The 73-year-old today, incarcerated in a French maximum security prison, after two decades of extremist activity captured on film, like today, in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.
The calendar shows August 14, 1994 and the human-killing African heat makes even more impatient the French DST agents who have arrived in Sudan with one and only objective: to find the infamous dead or alive terrorist.
Born in 1949 in Venezuela, to a lawyer father and an ardent Marxist, he owes his first name to the then leader of the October Revolution in the USSR, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. At the age of 10, he was already enrolled in the youth of the Venezuelan Communist Party, but in 1966 his mother took him with her to England.

Ilitch Ramírez Sánchez will first study at Stafford House College in Kensington and then at the London School of Economics. All this, however, lasted only two years as in 1968 his father took him with him to Moscow and enrolled him in the “Patrice Lumumba” university, from where he was expelled…
In 1973, he crossed his Rubicon by joining the PFLP and began his activity as a terrorist, quickly losing any ideological background and “working” as a mercenary for dark interests.
In the 1970s and 1980s, he builds his legend by “starring” in murderous attacks, explosions, kidnappings, and anything else you can imagine, as long as he has money! Perhaps his most impressive “hit” is the attack on OPEC, in 1975 in Vienna, when he arrested and held hostages of delegates, even killing three. His expulsion from the PFLP resulted in him forming his own group, with Arab and East German members, rumored to want the ‘jackal’ on open lines with the Stasi among others.
The arrest of his wife in 1982 by the French authorities brought him to a permanent “war” with Pariswhich cost dozens of innocent lives of people caught in the shock wave of the bombs he planted.
The… cinematic concept

In the summer of 1994, French and American intelligence had information that Ilyich Ramirez Sanchez had found refuge in Sudan, via Jordan, having used false travel documents to get to Khartoum. Paris offered the Sudanese government significant rewards to lead them to “Charles the Jackal”, with Khartoum initially denying his presence in the country. After all, on August 11, 1994, the Venezuelan terrorist will be admitted to the emergency hospital and the time to capture him is now counting down.
The “jackal” was told he had to move, 48 hours after surgery for a clot in his genitals, to a villa, as there was information about his execution plan.

Just 24 hours after moving into his new residence and with the calendar showing August 14, 1994, his bodyguards drug him while he was sleeping, handcuff him and hand him over to French agents.
‘Carlos the Jackal’ realized what was happening when he woke up on the plane to Paris. On the morning of August 15, 1994, the then Minister of the Interior of France, Charles Pasqua, will announce in an emergency press conference: “Carlos is in the hands of French Justice and will be tried for his crimes».
