Carly Paoli, the soprano who bewitched the English royalty: “My heart remains Salento”

She has the sweetness of a fawn and the determination of a lioness: Carly Paoli is almost a mythological creature. Those who have listened to her sing are well aware of this, like the fans at the stadium of the Northern Ireland – Italy football match and the English royals, at the most exclusive event of the London season, the Royal Variety Performance at the Royal Albert Hall on November 18th.

The 32-year-old Italian-British soprano, reached on the phone between one rehearsal and another, is no stranger to noble performances: before Prince William and Kate Middleton, she had already performed in the presence of Prince Charles. During her career she shared the stage with the likes of Andrea Bocelli and Jennifer Hudson and in November she released her latest album, Carly Paoli and friends. Meanwhile, the agenda is full of performances and concerts, which will soon bring her back – she hopes – also to the Peninsula, where she will spend some stages of the pre-Christmas tour. In fact, in the land of its ancestors, Salento has left its heart.

Where in the world are you now?
“I am at home, on our farm in Wiltshire, fifteen minutes from Stonehenge, surrounded by nature and surrounded by all kinds of animals, including sheep. I don’t work the lands as a farmer because they are rented out, but it is a splendid place to live, together with my brother’s family and his two children ».

How will the year end?
“My December will be as busy as Santa’s: I have a TV concert to record, a holiday song to record with Tony Hadley (together with the O2 Arena in London we would inaugurate the new year before my 29 date tour in English cathedrals) and then charity exhibitions ».

How much has the forced stop in a pandemic weighed on you?
«I tried to stay active and in fact from that period the third album was born, full of duets, even if recorded separately, each at their own home, and with the orchestra from Prague. It seemed like a dream to me: after a long time we stopped, we felt an immense desire to express emotions ».

The last engagement of 2021?
«A little tour in Puglia».

Why Puglia?
«My maternal grandfather is from Spongano, in the province of Legge and I have a house on the seafront of Santa Maria di Leuca, it is my little piece of paradise. On these dates I will perform with the Magna Grecia Orchestra in four stages (Taranto, Matera, Lecce, Molfetta), but then I go back to England to my parents for the holidays, we cook together, especially desserts, and we spend Christmas day in pajamas all day. “

What is your favorite Salento tradition?
«The ritual of breakfast at the bar with the pasticciotto and the local coffee, the Quarta, which I stock and which I also bring to England, so the house is always invaded by the perfume of Lecce. It takes me back to the Christmas holidays spent with my grandfather in Salento, when we celebrated with the very large family at the restaurant with endless lunches. And then all to dance the typical dances. I like Latin American music and in fact as a child I took lessons and I also learned pizzica ».

How was the passion for singing born?
“As a child, any excuse was good for singing. One of my earliest memories dates back to when I was four, I was with my grandmother on the double-decker bus back to her country and we sat at the top. I spent all the way singing Christmas carols, but when our stop came, everyone present collected some pennies and gave them to me. It was my first paid concert ».
