THE CNN Specialist in agribusiness Carmen Perez spoke about the plant-based protein market, the search for sustainability through food and the problems of these products.
She said that, according to a recent study, “the discussion around plant proteins is guided by large corporations and misleading, generalist statements.”
According to Perez, the material brings the companies’ attention points: not considering how food is produced; seek sustainability only through the reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases; failing to differentiate modes of production and consumption in different regions of the world; failing to identify the complexity and power relationships across the food system; and the overemphasis on proteins.
She explained that, in Brazil, the vast majority of animals are raised in natural pasture systems. “There is a lot to go forward, but there is already a movement in search of treatments that consider animal welfare and respect environmental legislation,” she said.
