Carnival 2024: see what the 2nd night of parades was like in SP

The second night of parades of Carnival 2024 in São Paulo took place on Saturday (10). The Anhembi Sambadrome, located in the north of the capital, hosted seven more schools from the Special Group, with themes that paid homage to everything from hip hop to the Ifá religion and philosophy, as well as names such as Fafá de Belém and Mário de Andrade.

The biggest champion of the São Paulo carnival, Vai-Vai, was responsible for opening the night. The Bela Vista school celebrated 40 years of Hip Hop culture in Brazil and featured the participation of Mano Brown and KL Jay, from Racionais MC's. The parade marked the school's return to the Special Group, after winning Access Group 1 in 2023.

The second to parade was Tom Maior, who took to the parade floor a reinterpretation, in an indigenous version, of the Greek myth Orpheus and Eurydice, with the plot “Aysú: a love story”. The school in the Sumaré neighborhood is seeking its first title in the Special Group.

Mocidade Alegre was the third to parade, with the theme “Brasiléia Desvairada”, written by carnival artist Jorge Silveira. The current champion of the São Paulo carnival showed the journey of writer Mário de Andrade, played by actor Pascoal da Conceição, through the corners of Brazil.

Next, Gaviões da Fiel paraded with the plot “Vou te Levar pro Infinito”, which proposes a journey on a special ship commanded by harlequins and colombinas from another dimension to different “infinites”. The theme was inspired by an excerpt from the 1995 champion plot, in an attempt to win the title – the last time the school was champion in the Special Group was in 2003. The parade also featured Sabrina Sato as drum queen and Alessandra Negrini alongside the passers.

The Golden Eagle was the fifth to pass through the Anhembi track. The plot paid homage to the history of radio in Brazil, which celebrated 100 years in September 2022. To achieve this, the Pompéia school portrayed iconic moments in the history of Brazilian radio, such as the 1958 World Cup and the Second World War, in addition to a tribute to radio host Eli Corrêa in the last car.

The penultimate to parade was Império de Casa Verde, which was placed third in 2023. The school paid homage to Fafá de Belém and the Amazon, with the plot “Fafá, the Mystical Cabocla in Forest rituals”, signed by the carnival artist Leandro Barboza. The opening ceremony was attended by the singer's daughter, Mariana Belém. Fafá herself also participated in the parade, present in the last car.

The dawn of parades was closed by Academicos do Tucuruvi, which chose to tell the story of the Nigerian religion and philosophy Ifá in its plot. The school was the 11th champion at last year's carnival and is looking for an unprecedented title in the Special Group.

On Friday (9), the first night of parades by the elite of the São Paulo Carnival also took place at Anhembi. On the occasion, Camisa Verde e Branco, Barroca Zona Sul, Dragões da Real, Independente Tricolor, Acadêmicos do Tatuapé, Mancha Verde and Rosas de Ouro paraded.

The counting to decide who will be the champion of the Special Group will take place next Tuesday (13), at 4pm, at the Anhembi Sambadrome.
