Carnival blocks parade through the streets of Rio de Janeiro despite the ban

Since the first week of January, the City Hall of Rio de Janeiro announced that the carnival blocks are prohibited from parading through the city. Closed parties with the charge of proof of vaccine against Covid-19 are allowed. The samba school parade was postponed to April and will be held with a series of restrictions.

Despite all these determinations, the weekend was marked by the parade of at least two blocks in the city of Rio de Janeiro. One of them took place on Saturday (19) in the city center. The images taken by CNN show a group of around 200 revelers gathered on Avenida Rodrigues Alves, near the Museum of Tomorrow. The images also show the work of street vendors along with revelers.

On Sunday (20), another group also paraded through the Center. The concentration was at Praça da Cruz Vermelha. According to a reveler who participated in the event, municipal guards were on site and accompanied part of the route. According to him, there were no restrictions.

The announcement of the suspension of carnival was made by Mayor Eduardo Paes in a live on January 4th. In the live broadcast, he announced: “I just had, at that moment, a meeting with the people of the street blocks, and we informed them that the street carnival, as it was done until 2020, will not happen in 2022 Unfortunately, I speak here as a mayor who likes Carnival, as a citizen, and unfortunately we cannot do it”.

In relation to the weekend blocks, the Municipal Public Order Department (SEOP) informed in a note that it monitors irregular events, through the intelligence sector, so that there are no disturbances in the city and the Municipal Guard acts in the demobilization of these events. .

On Sunday, municipal guards acted in the demobilization of a block in downtown Rio, in Praça da Cruz Vermelha. Some members moved to Rua da Carioca, occupying a piece of land, but the Municipal Guard acted on the spot until the group was completely dispersed.

On Saturday morning, SEOP said that it sent a team from the Municipal Guard to downtown Rio. Also according to the secretariat, about 100 people were at the event, which was demobilized by agents around 11 am with dialogue and without registration. of incidents.

Despite the city hall’s position, the images showing the revelers and street vendors were taken on Saturday around 4 pm near the Manhã Museum, on Pier Mauá.
