After two years of a pandemic, the King Momo will once again receive the key to the city of Rio de Janeiro. The ceremony, in which the mayor symbolically hands over the command of the municipality to one of the main characters of the revelry, is scheduled for Wednesday (20), at noon, at the City Palace.
This Friday (15), on social networks, Eduardo Paes published a video recorded last Sunday, in which he appears dancing samba and celebrating Carnival out of time.
“My feelings for those who don’t like it, but our biggest popular party and biggest cultural manifestation in Brazil comes back next week. Long live Rio de Janeiro! Long live the carioca carnival,” she wrote.

The Royal Court of Rio’s Carnival had already been crowned on January 7, in Cidade do Samba. The choice was made before Mayor Eduardo Paes decided to postpone the party, which would take place in February, because of the increase in cases of Covid-19 caused by the advancement of the variant omicron.
At the time, through the sum of popular and sworn votes, Wilson Dias da Costa Neto35, was crowned King Momo for the fifth time. Alex de Oliveira Silva was chosen Viceroy, Thaiana Rodrigues Pinheiro was crowned Queen, and Luara Neto Lino and Deisiane Conceição de Jesus were crowned first and second princesses, respectively.
King Momo is inspired by the Greek mythology character “Momos”, who personified irony and sarcasm. In Brazil, the figure was adapted for the revelry and became one of the main symbols of Carnival.
In addition to the Official Court, King, Queen and Child Princesses, chosen in 2019, will continue with the titles this year, opening the Children’s Parade, on Sunday, April 24, at 4 pm.
The Grupo Especial Samba School parade takes place at Marquês de Sapucaí on April 22 and 23 (Friday and Saturday) and the parade of the winning schools will be on the following Saturday,
