Carnival should inject more than R$ 227 million in São Paulo, says SPTuris

After a two-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, samba schools in the city of São Paulo return to the Anhembi Sambadrome this Friday (22) and Saturday (23).

Tourism associated with Carnival should inject more than R$ 227 million into the economy of São Paulo, according to estimates by São Paulo Turismo (SPTuris), the official tourism and events company in the city of São Paulo.

In an interview with CNN, the president of SPTuris, Gustavo Pires, said that the resumption of events, with the improvement of the pandemic indicators, is seen with great expectation by the sector. According to Pires, the economic impact of Carnival 2020 in the city of São Paulo was R$ 3 billion, with the parades in the sambadrome responsible for R$ 227 million.

“We know that this year is unusual because of the date change, but even so, the hotel chain, for example, is approximately 60% occupied. In 2020, the number of tourists was 37%, so it heats up the economy, generates jobs and in addition to being the people’s party, a very important democratic party for our city,” he said.

According to Pires, the São Paulo City Hall investment in this year’s party is R$ 57 million, including institutional support and support for the sambadrome’s infrastructure, in addition to transfers to the Independent League of Samba Schools of São Paulo (LigaSP) and to the Union of São Paulo Samba Schools (UESP).
