Cases are setting a record and the Netherlands is running out of diagnostic tests

The Dutch health authorities announced today that they are finishing their diagnostic tests for Covid-19, while in the Netherlands for the second consecutive day more than 20,000 new cases were registered, the highest rate since the beginning of the pandemic.

“We are at our best,” said Jaap Aikelbom, head of the Covid-19 National Public Health Team.

The agency is working to increase the capacity for diagnostic tests, amid rising cases that have taken Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s government by surprise. About 85% of adults in the Netherlands are fully vaccinated.

The National Institutes of Health (RIVM) announced yesterday that a record number of cases were recorded, over 110,000 in one week. Cases increased by 44% compared to the previous week and the largest increase was recorded in children aged 4-12 years. Hospital admissions are also increasing.

The new wave began shortly after the government lifted most of the measures in September, a decision it took back after a sharp rise in cases. Last week he imposed a partial lockdown while the use of a mask is again mandatory in stores. Bars and restaurants close at 8pm.
