Cases of Oropouche fever in the northern region in 2024 are already three times higher than last year

In the northern region of the country, 2,255 cases of Oropouche fever were registered in the first months of 2024 alone. The number represents almost three times the total number of infections from last year in five states in the region: Acre, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia and Roraima.

Amazonas leads the ranking with more than half of the cases, registering 1,953 infected people from January until this Tuesday (12).

In a press conference held this afternoon, the Ministry of Health warned about the increase in cases of Oropouche fever, which is also transmitted by a mosquito and presents symptoms similar to dengue and chikungunya.

During her speech, Health Secretary Ethel Maciel supported the extremely high numbers of contamination due to climate change, which favor the simultaneous circulation of the 4 dengue serotypes and less common arboviruses such as Oropouche.

Dengue in slowdown

During the same press conference, Ethel Maciel pointed to a slowdown in probable dengue cases.

According to numbers from the Arbovirus Monitoring Panel, the country records 1,585,385 probable cases of the disease, with 450 confirmed deaths and another 849 deaths are under investigation due to their relationship with the disease. The Ministry of Health also points out that of the probable cases, 13,112 of them are considered serious and present warning signs.
