Cate Blanchett, queen of the Golden Globes 2023 (and aims at the Oscars)

Michelle Yeoh took the stage to accept her award at the 2023 Golden Globes as best actress in a musical or comedy.

Yeoh won for his role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, the action film and genre drama in which she plays Evelyn, a laundromat owner who becomes involved in a multi-universe plot to save the human race from destruction. Among the competitors were Lesley Manville for Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, Margot Robbie for Babylon, Anya Taylor-Joy for The Menu and Emma Thompson for Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.

In his acceptance speech, Yeoh reflected on how his ten-year career has resulted in this role, which he considers one of the most important and satisfying: «It has been an incredible journey, an incredible struggle, but it was worth it“, he said.

Yeoh has already bagged awards and critical acclaim this season, including the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s top honor and the National Board of Review’s Actress Award just this past weekend. “I think mine 40 years of experience have been like a long rehearsal for this film,” a Vanity Fair talking about his role in the film of Daniel Kwan And Daniel Scheinert.

“I think all you women understand that. As the days and years and numbers increase, it seems that the opportunities are shrinking» said Yeoh, now 60, who also reflected on the difficulties faced as an actress of Asian origin in Hollywood.

She concluded her speech by acknowledging the merits of those who preceded her: «This is for all the shoulders I rest onfor all those who came before me and who look like me, and for all those who accompany me on this journey».

As for Best Actress in a Drama, Cate Blanchett won but was not present to collect the award (the presenter Henry Golding stated it was filming in the UK). Also present Olivia Colman for Empire of Light, Viola Davis for The Woman King, Ana de Armas for Blonde And Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans. Blanchett’s compelling work as composer-conductor Lydia Tár in the film by Todd Field has been one of the most talked about performances of the year since the film’s debut at the Venice Film Festival, where Blanchett won the Best Actress award. Among the awards she has already received are those from the National Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle, as well as an accolade from the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Both Blanchett and Yeoh are frontrunners for several more nominations (SAG Award nominations to be announced tomorrow) and have already earned Oscar nominations. Their two wins today cement the race for this year’s Best Actress as one of the most exciting for many years now.
