Caution! Fake deposits are gaining popularity in Russia

The Moscow prosecutor’s office has warned of a new fraud scheme, Izvestia reports. Attackers call on behalf of banks and offer to issue a deposit at a high interest rate. The victims are sent a link to the bank’s website – visually very similar to the official one, but in fact it is a fake page. There they fill in their data for authorization, but instead of entering their personal account, the information becomes available to scammers.

The prosecutor’s office said that in this way the criminals want to receive card data in order to withdraw money from them or force a person to transfer funds to another account on their own. They also noted that in the first quarter of this year, the number of such crimes increased by 38% compared to the same period last year.

Earlier this month, it became known that the Russian Ministry of Finance is developing measures that provide for refunds to victims of telephone scams. During 2020, the number of transactions without the consent of bank customers amounted to 773 thousand, and the amount of stolen money – 9.8 billion rubles. According to the Bank of Russia, on average 11,400 rubles were stolen from Russians and 347,800 rubles from legal entities.
