Turkish diplomacy continues along the lines of creating channels with the Syrian regime Assad, with new statements by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu on Tuesday morning.
More specifically, the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that the Intelligence services of the two countries are in contact, as well as that Ankara does not set prerequisites in its dialogue with Damascus.
He added that the Turkey-Syria talks should have specific goals, while he said he does not plan to meet any Syrian government official in Shanghai, China, where he will be, clarifying that the president of Syria is not invited there.
Mr. Cavusoglu also referred to the protests taking place in the Syrian opposition-controlled (largely also the Turkish military) part of northern and northwestern Syria, noting that Turkish intelligence agencies are investigating the motives behind the protests.
Part of the political forces and Syrian rebels who have been supported for years by Turkey (given that Saudi Arabia and Qatar have “severed” their ties with the anti-regime bloc for years) have reacted strongly to recent statements by Turkish officials about the need for Assad and opposition to reach a compromise.
