High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), also known as High Intensity Intermittent Exercise (HIIE) or Sprint Interval Training, is an improved form of interval training, an exercise strategy with alternating short, intense periods of exercise with less intense periods for recovery. HIIT is a form of cardiovascular exercise. A typical HIIT workout lasts 9 to 20 minutes. These short, intense workouts provide improved athletic power and condition, glucose metabolism, and fat burning.
A HIIT workout consists of a warm-up phase followed by 6-10 repetitions of the exercise at a high pace, separated repetitions of the exercise at medium intensity, and ending with a relaxation phase. It is necessary to do high-tempo repetitions with an intensity close to the maximum. Exercise of medium intensity – about half of the maximum possible intensity. The number of repetitions and the length of each depends on the exercise. The goal is to do at least 6 cycles, and complete the entire HIIT workout no earlier than 15 minutes, but no later than 20.
There is no specific formula for HIIT. Depending on the state of the cardiovascular system, moderate intensity can be an easy step. The original training protocol set a work to rest ratio of 2 to 1, such as 30-40 seconds of hard sprinting followed by 15-20 seconds of jogging or walking.
