CBS News presenters cut off the microphones of the United States vice presidential candidates for the first time during the debate this Tuesday (1), while JD Vance and Tim Walz discussed the issue of immigration.
The candidates were talking about a parole program that allows Haitian immigrants to remain in the United States legally. Vance questioned the legality of the project, while the presenters tried to continue the debate. When Walz tried to interfere with his opponent’s questions, CBS removed the audio from the microphones, an artifice provided for in the debate rules.
Immigration emerged as a key issue during the 2024 presidential campaign, and was among the first topics discussed during the vice presidential debate.
Vance’s stance on immigration
Several Republicans, including Vance, have fueled a series of conspiracy theories about Haitian immigrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. The case generated chaos in the city and a series of attacks against immigrants in recent weeks.
The Republican senator also did not directly respond to a question about whether he would support separating children from their parents at the U.S. border.
“My point is that we already have mass child separations, thanks to Kamala Harris’s open border,” Vance said.
Vance also accused Kamala of allowing cartels to “operate freely in this country,” claiming they use children to smuggle drugs into the country.
Walz’s stance on immigration
Tim Walz noted that a bipartisan group in the U.S. Congress worked to craft new legislation that would have provided additional funding and security at the border, but former President Donald Trump called on Republicans to vote against it.
“Donald Trump said ‘No,’ and he told them to vote no because it gives them a campaign issue,” Walz said. “What would Donald Trump say if we actually did some of these things and they need to be done through the legislature, you can’t just do it through the executive branch.”
Walz said the former president had four years to fulfill his border promises while he was in office.
“He promised you, America, how easy it would be: ‘I’m going to build a big, beautiful wall and Mexico is going to pay for it.’ Less than 2% of this wall was built, and Mexico didn’t pay a dime. But here we are again, nine years after he came down that escalator dehumanizing people and telling them what he was going to do.”
Historical debate
The event marks the first and only confirmed debate between JD Vance, Donald Trump’s candidate, and Tim Walz, Kamala Harris’ candidate, while polls show a tight scenario in the 2024 race for the White House.
The confrontation will last 90 minutes and will not feature opening speeches or an in-studio audience. See all the rules through this article.
