A panel of consultants from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of United States voted this Saturday (18) to recommend vaccines against Covid-19 for children as young as six months, making it likely that a national rollout could start next week.
The 12-0 vote in favor of the change needs to be signed by CDC Director Rochelle Walensky in order for the US government to begin rolling out immunizations for children under 5.
THE Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized on Friday (17) the vaccine Modern for the group from six months to five years, and that of pfizer /BioNTech for children aged 6 months to 4 years. The Pfizer immunizer is already authorized for children over 5 years of age.
“This infection kills children and we have an opportunity to prevent that,” Beth Bell, one of the panel’s doctors, said after the vote. “Here’s an opportunity to avoid a known risk.”
the president’s administration Joe Biden plans to start vaccinating the age group as early as next week.
“We will begin shipping millions of doses of vaccines to children to thousands of places parents know and trust – including pediatricians’ offices, children’s hospitals and pharmacies,” Biden said in a statement Friday.
“As doses are delivered, parents will be able to start scheduling vaccines for their youngest children as early as next week, with appointments increasing in the coming days and weeks,” Biden explained.
Parents, you’ll soon be able to schedule appointments for these vaccines at places like pediatricians’ offices, children’s hospitals, community health centers and pharmacies.
These vaccines are safe and highly effective.

While many parents in the United States are looking forward to the campaign, it is unclear how strong the demand for immunizations will be. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was authorized for children ages 5 to 11 in October, but only about 29% of that group is fully vaccinated so far, federal data show.
CVS Health Corp CVS.N plans to provide doses for children 18 months and older, while Rite Aid Corp RAD.N and Walmart Inc WMT.N will make these vaccines available to children under 3 years of age. Babies are traditionally vaccinated in the doctor’s office.
Public health officials have been pushing for childhood vaccinations ahead of the new school year, which they hope will help prevent hospitalizations and deaths if infections from the disease rise again.
Covid-19 is usually milder in children. Still, as of March 2020, it is the fifth leading cause of death in those aged 1 to 4 years and the fourth leading cause of death in children under one year, the CDC points out.
CDC advisers will meet again next week to consider whether to support the use of the Moderna vaccine for children ages 6 to 17. There has been some concern about the rate of rare cases of cardiac inflammation in teenagers and young men from the Moderna vaccine. Advisors should consider this data.
