CDMX Congress approves neutral uniform: girls and boys will choose what to wear

On May 25, the Congress of Mexico City approved the opinion and made modifications to the reform of the Local Education Law, which stipulates that basic education students may use the neutral uniform within educational establishments. , where they can choose between wearing pants or a skirt as their uniform, regardless of whether they are boys or girls.

Said approval arises as a result of the proposal presented a few months ago by the head of Government of the CDMX, Claudia Sheinbaum, who, initially, considered that it was the girls who had the option of choosing what to wear. However, in a debate with the PRD deputy, Polimnia Romana, it was stipulated that the possibility of choosing would be for both boys and girls.

After establishing that both genders had the possibility of choosing the uniform garment that they should wear within the educational establishments and justifying said opinion, the president of the Education Commission, the deputy José de Jesús Martín del Campo Castañeda, assured that this set of reforms has as its main function to respond to the educational needs that Mexico City currently presents.

In addition, he stressed that with this series of reforms, the aim is to claim the universal right to education, always seeking the benefit of the students. But that’s not all, as he also highlighted that with this, both girls and boys will be given the opportunity to choose the garment with which they feel most comfortable without fear of being judged or even sanctioned by rules imposed in educational institutions.

Every girl, boy and adolescent has the right to the free development of their personality. In schools, both public and private, girls will be allowed to wear a neutral uniform. Girls and boys will be able to freely choose whether they want to wear pants or a skirt to attend classes. Likewise, schools must refrain from imposing rules that imply restrictions on the rights of students, motivated by their physical appearance.

In addition to this ruling, the “Escuela es Nuestra” program was established, which will be an annual universal support to all public schools of basic education for, under the organization of parents, in coordination with the educational authorities, manage resources for the maintenance of the campuses, as well as grant support for uniforms and school supplies.
