Celebrity hacker accused of stealing $ 784,000 worth of cryptocurrencies

Briton Joseph James O’Connor, who previously hacked celebrity Twitter accounts, has been charged with stealing $ 784,000 worth of BTC, ETH and LTC through SIM card fraud.

According to
publications Reuters, this week, 22-year-old Briton Joseph James O’Connor, aka PlugwalkJoe, has been re-charged. Prosecutors claim he was involved in a conspiracy to commit SIM and other electronic communications fraud, money laundering, aggravated identity theft and computer hacking in New York.

The fraudulent scheme was in effect from March to May 2019. As a result, O’Connor and other attackers managed to steal BTC, ETH and LTC for a total of $ 784,000.

Last July, O’Connor was arrested for his involvement in a massive hacking of politicians and celebrity Twitter accounts. The victims of the hack were former US President Barack Obama, incumbent President Joe Biden, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, Tron founder Justin Sun ), investor Warren Buffett and famous rapper Kanye West.

On behalf of these people, the scammers announced the distribution of bitcoins and asked users to transfer a certain amount of BTC to them, promising to send much larger amounts in return. In March, burglary accomplice Graham Ivan Clark pleaded guilty in Florida court and agreed to serve three years in a juvenile prison.

SIM fraud is common. In February, British police arrested eight people for stealing $ 100 million in fiat currencies and cryptoassets using cell phone numbers. In addition, last year the US Department of Justice accused a California student of committing a similar scam.
