Brazil recorded an average of 107 cell phones stolen or robbed per hour in 2023 totaling 937,294 occurrences, according to data from the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP).
The survey points to a significant change in the methods of cell phone theft. For the first time, thefts surpassed robberies, with 494,295 thefts versus 442,999 robberies throughout the year.
Compared to 2022, there was a 4.7% global reduction in the number of cell phone thefts and robberies in 2023.
The data also shows that, in the case of cell phone thefts:
- 78% of incidents occurred on public roads.
- Robberies are more frequent between Monday and Friday.
- The most common times are between 5am and 7am and between 6pm and 10pm.
The times when most robberies occur are precisely those when people are generally traveling in large cities, going to work or returning home.
For cell phone thefts, 44% of the records occurred on public roads, followed by 14% that occurred in commercial/financial establishments. 13% occurred in residences.
The preferred times for criminals are:
- Between 10am and 11am.
- From mid-afternoon, around 3pm, until 8pm.
Unlike robberies, cell phone thefts are more common on weekends, which account for 35% of cases.
