Cellular Law: Bahia begins to implement restriction on use in schools

Scheduled for this Monday (10), the beginning of the school year in Bahia brings a change: the implementation of Cellular law in state schools.

In the state school system of Bahia, by this Monday, schools must send to those responsible a standardized statement, install warning signs and distribute informative leaflets on the new legislation. The measure, sanctioned in January 2025, aims to restrict the use of mobile devices within the teaching units, both in classes and intervals and recess.

Although Law 15.100 prohibits the use of cell phones during classes, recess and extracurricular activities, it allows the use of devices when authorized by teachers, for pedagogical purposes . The measure also authorizes the use of cell phones in exceptional situations, such as health emergencies or to ensure accessibility and inclusion.

Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT) pointed out that while recognizing the importance of mobile, it is essential that families collaborate to ensure a balance in the use of devices. “We know how important the phone is, but the family is also very important, education is very important. So I will ask families for help so we can order the use of the phone so that we don’t have that child all the time there, inattentive from school, friends, ”he said.

The statement of the Department of Education was made to the press, but the government did not clarify the place where cell phones should be kept, nor on possible punishments if the rules are breached by the students.

According to the Ministry of Education (MEC), with the application of the new law, the goal is to protect the mental, physical and psychic health of students. The measure has also been adopted in other countries, such as France and Denmark.
