THE Demographic Census 2022 released this Friday (23) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) identified 2.4 million Brazilians with diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder (TEA) – 1.2% of the population . The condition is more prevalent among men (1.5%) than among women (0.9%), with prominence to Children from 5 to 9 years old group that presented the largest percentage: 2.6%.
According to IBGE, the highest concentration of diagnosis at younger ages reflects evolution of diagnostic methods and greater attention in schools and families but also highlights persistent challenges of educational and social inclusion .
“These data are fundamental to thinking about public policies, access and mandatory sectors of the school, and thinking that professionals need to be more trained to help and serve these people. There is an urgency to change in training as well, other disciplines can be inserted within the colleges’ bars so that you have more information in how to help these people,” says Tatiana Serra, neuropsychologist and expert in autism spectrum disorder, CNN .
THE Schooling rate among people with autism (36.9%) exceeds the national average (24.3%) especially among children and adolescents. About 70% of students with ASD are in elementary school and most focus between 6 and 14 years. Already in Higher education, the presence of autistic is only 0.8%.
Another relevant data is that 46.1% of people with ASD 25 or older have only incomplete elementary school or no degree of instruction, compared to 35.2% of the general population.
The highest diagnostic rate was recorded among whites (1.3%), while indigenous people had the lowest (0.9%).
The new research also points out that the Southeast concentrates the largest absolute number of people with ASD followed by the Northeast, South, North and Midwest. In proportional terms, the differences between regions are small.
“This also has reason. Sao Paulo is a populous city that has a lot of access to information, easier for professionals, this explains this concentration. If we look at the Midwest, Northeast, are regions that are precariously professionals, sometimes information, all is reflected in the data,” he concludes Tatiana Serra.
