Central Bank of Honduras Denies Rumors of Recognizing Bitcoin as Legal Tender

Last week, there were rumors that bitcoin payments may be legal in Honduras. However, the Central Bank of the country issued an official refutation of this information.

Earlier there were rumors that the President of Honduras Xiomara Castro (Xiomara Castro) may recognize bitcoin as a means of payment in order to “avoid the hegemony of the US dollar.” However, the Banco Central de Honduras declaredthat the first cryptocurrency is not regulated in Honduras and is not used as a means of payment either in Honduras or in the vast majority of other countries.

The statement emphasizes that only the Central Bank of the country can issue banknotes and coins, so the official currency will remain the same – lempira. In addition, the Central Bank of Honduras does not track cryptocurrency transactions and cannot guarantee the reliability of the use of digital currencies. Therefore, any entrepreneur must assume all risks regarding the acceptance of such payments.

At the same time, Banco Central de Honduras will continue to explore the concept of issuing a state cryptocurrency, as well as the regulatory and technical framework for this. Recall that in August last year, the Honduran company TGU Consulting Group installed the first cryptomat in the country. The car was installed in the country’s capital, Tegucigalpa, in one of the office buildings.
