“Today at the Committee on Institutions and Transparency, PASOK-Movement for Change refused to give a positive opinion to the newly elected Mr. Mitsotakis for the position of the new commander of the National Intelligence Service”, PASOK-KINAL MP Haris Kastanidis said in a statement occasion of the appointment of Th. Demiris to the EYP.
Mr. Kastanidis in his statement adds: “And this is because we are going through a period of institutional deviation with all the terrible things that have happened in the offense of Democracy and the rule of law, and therefore a prime minister who is interested in correcting his mistakes and those committed, should consult with the opposition parties and within a framework of consensus appoint a person who has wider agreement and support to carry out his duties.
Before the meeting of the Institutions and Transparency Committee was over, a major political issue for the government arose from the answers given by the candidate for the National Intelligence Service, Mr. Demiris, regarding the possible surveillance of political figures.
This major political issue assumes paramount importance and has absolute priority in its investigation. This is exactly why PASOK-Movement for Change, addressed to all political parties, with a sense of national duty and institutional responsibility, requests that the immediate convening of the Committee on Institutions and Transparency be preceded by the pre-scheduled debate in Parliament at the level of party leaders, in order for the current EYP commander to come again and give explanations for what we called a major political issue.
Otherwise, Friday’s debate, without knowing the persons being watched, how, under what conditions and why, will be the occasion for a sterile partisan confrontation, which does not facilitate the revelation of the truth. And above all, the truth will not guide the political parties. We, however, assume this responsibility to proceed with institutional decisions that will correct the operation of the EYP and place it on the basis of constitutional order and legality”.
