Chainalysis: North Korean hackers stole $ 400 million worth of cryptocurrencies in 2021

Over the past year, North Korean hackers stole $ 400 million in cryptocurrency, according to analyst firm Chinalysis, with 58% of that amount stolen in ETH.

The report says that if in 2017 North Korean hackers focused on BTC, then in 2021 only a fifth of the stolen funds came from the first cryptocurrency. Analysts noted that investment firms and cryptocurrency exchanges were attacked by hackers. In doing so, attackers used advanced social engineering, malware, and phishing.

According to the UN Security Council, with the help of the stolen cryptocurrency, the DPRK compensates for the damage from economic sanctions, and also invests in the development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. Analysts emphasize that over the past three years, the threat that North Korea poses to cryptocurrency exchanges has grown dramatically and is now at an all-time high.

Recall that in 2018, hackers from the DPRK managed to steal more than $ 500 million worth of cryptocurrencies. As Chinalysis analysts reported in 2020, North Korea laundered the stolen cryptocurrencies through trading networks.
