The working group of the Chamber that analyzes the tax reform will meet this Wednesday (1st) with the President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, to discuss the possibility of senators following the discussions in the collegiate, as a way to advance the procedure in the House. High of the National Congress.
The expectation is that Pacheco will choose a senator or a small group of congressmen to informally participate in the working group of the Chamber. Thus, if the proposal is approved by the deputies, the discussion between the senators would not start from scratch.
The information was confirmed by the coordinator of the tax reform working group, Reginaldo Lopes (PT-MG), in a press conference after the first collegiate meeting this Tuesday (28).
“We are scheduling a meeting of our group with President Rodrigo Pacheco tomorrow so we can talk and build this participation in this initial process here in the Chamber of Deputies. We had an experience in the Social Security reform where the Senate participated in the debate in parallel. I think it would be a good model for it to guarantee immediately, after approval in the Chamber, the procedure in the Senate”, said Lopes.
In 2019, during the Jair Bolsonaro government, Congress approved a reform of the social security system. At the time, the PEC of the reform was discussed first by the Chamber, but with the follow-up of senators involved with the proposal, which accelerated the processing in the Alta House in the second half of that year.
Lopes also said that the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, made himself available to talk to congressmen on a weekly basis about tax reform topics in order to guarantee their approval.
“The minister made himself available to meet with our working group once a week for us to find solutions to ensure the approval of the tax reform,” he said.
The tax reform working group will formalize this Wednesday (1st) the collegiate’s schedule of activities. There will be about three months of discussions, meetings and public hearings until the proposal’s rapporteur, deputy Aguinaldo Ribeiro (PP-PB), presents the final text of the PEC. After that period, the proposal must be taken to the plenary of the Chamber to be voted.
