The commission of the Chamber of Deputies created to follow the developments of the deaths of the indigenist Bruno Pereira and the British journalist Dom Philips wants to hear, next Tuesday (12), the Minister of Justice, Anderson Torres.
The invitation was approved at a meeting of the group this Wednesday (06), the first after the diligence carried out together with a group of senators in Vale do Javari, an indigenous land where the duo died just over a month ago. The Ministry of Justice has not yet confirmed its presence.
The deputies’ idea is to present to the minister the reports of indigenous leaders in the region, who denounced the dismantling of Funai’s activities in the area, and demanded the departure of Ricardo Xavier, the current president, from office. The Chamber and Senate committees that follow the case approved a request by Senator Fabiano Contarato (PT-ES) to recommend that Torres remove the current head of Funai from his post.
Anderson Torres had already been invited to speak in the Senate about the deaths of Bruno and Dom, but he did not attend – the hearing was scheduled for the same day that former Minister of Education Milton Ribeiro was arrested last month.
In the report prepared after her visit to Vale do Javari last week, deputy Vivi Reis (PSOL-PA) points out the need to pressure the government to clarify the death of another Funai agent, Maxciel Pereira dos Santos, in 2019, also in region where Bruno and Dom died. The document also talks about “dismantling” the institution and demands security measures to protect the indigenous people who work in the territory and who live under constant threat.
